Psimer A641.9.3.RB - Becoming a Resonant Leader

A641.9.3.RB - Becoming a Resonant Leader Dear Self, I am 10 hours from earning my Master’s degree, an accomplishment I had written off many years ago.   While the catalyst for the accelerated graduation stemmed from the Coast Guard requiring advanced education, I quickly figured out my pursuit of the degree was one hundred percent for me, and not the Coast Guard at all; probably explains why I could keep the pace.   And the drive came from a passion to learn, vice a “check in the box.”   I held fast when people questioned why on earth I would choose a degree in something like leadership – ironically most of them don’t know a thing about leading. These past 10 months have undoubtedly been the most difficult of my life.   Not just because of the sheer volume of school work, work-work, but managing all of that while being a single parent and being committed to fostering animals.   I hit many low points when I was tired, stressed and pulled in too many di...

Psimer_A641.8.3.RB - Personal Balance Sheet

Psimer_A641.8.3.RB - Personal Balance Sheet My distinctive strengths (things I know I do well and strengths that others see in me). My kindness is a distinctive strength, because I try to extend kindness to everyone I meet.   Others not only see kindness in me, they adopt my behavior and remark about how I always make a connection with people.               My potential strengths (things I could do better or more often if I focused or things I do well in some situations and could begin to apply more broadly). My potential strength is continuing my education.   A few months ago, my dream was to apply for law school.   However, having spent the last few months in school full-time, I do not think law school is in the near future.   Applying is not out of the question, but I am thinking more realistically about how I would attend a demanding three-year program while working full-time, ...

Psimer_A641 7 3 RB Appreciating Your Real Self

A641.7.3.RB - Appreciating Your "Real Self" It’s Worth It! The greatest worth in my life is spending quality time with my son Everett.   Everett is my companion in life.   I dedicate most of my time and energy to caring for him and giving him a fulfilled and happy life. Being a mom is the most difficult challenge, as every minute is a learning moment for us both.   Full Potential – Self and Leader Shared Responsibility My worth in the Coast Guard is taking care of people.   I am a unique leader who actually helps people be at their best and reach their full potential.   I accomplish this through honest, open communication.   Recently, I onboarded two new members at my unit.   During our conversation I explained my role as taking care of them and their families.   Particularly supporting their dreams – even if that is dream is not being in the Coast Guard.   By explaining my leadership philosophy, they both immediately told me very p...

Psimer A641.5.3.RB - ICT at the Team Level

Psimer A641.5.3.RB - ICT at the Team Level Olympic US Women’s Soccer team The Olympic US Women’s Soccer team was formed in 1985 and the players earned no salary, only $10.00 in meal money (Royer, 2019).   Since the inception of the team, the players were poorly regarded which is probably one of the major reasons the evolution of the women’s soccer program is a great case study for Intentional Change Theory.   Intentional Change Theory hinges on identity, self-reflection and self-actualization which is ultimately for the greater good. In the case of women’s Olympic team, playing soccer was more than just about the sport.   The women’s team has been influential in many socioeconomic and societal transformations including pay discrimination.   Before the 1996 Olympics, the team shunned the Olympic training camp. The team and soccer federation did come to an agreement, leading to a second gold medal; however as cited by ( Elting , 2022), “Julie Foudy called up ...

A641.4.3.RB - Tipping Points of Emotional Intelligence_Psimer_Andrea

A641.4.3.RB - Tipping Points of Emotional Intelligence_Psimer_Andrea “Good is the enemy of great” ~Jim Collins What was the situation? My primary instance of experiencing a tipping point at work was in 2023 when I was in a high state of burnout.   I was the Commanding Officer of Military Personnel with a significant amount of responsibility and authority.   I have described many emotional effects of leadership from this tour throughout the three modules.   I describe the tipping point as a cumulation of stress, burnout, feeling unsatisfied, among other emotionally intense sensations.   What did you do? The tipping point resulted in me requesting to leave the Coast Guard for up to three years.   I requested to leave as a protective measure for myself to hopefully find happiness and peace again.   In deciding if I would request to leave, I researched graduate schools for myself, elementary schools for my son.   I considered for us to mov...

A641.3.3.RB - Emotional Intelligence: Getting Results!_Psimer_Andrea

A641.3.3.RB - Emotional Intelligence: Getting Results!_Psimer_Andrea Self-awareness I recently learned self-awareness skills out of a necessity for survival. This will be an area of lifelong learning and continuous refining.   From a career point of view, I was thrust into the deep end of self-awareness at my last job, after I became completely consumed by the work and other people’s problems.   I lost not only self-awareness but awareness of everything.   As Goleman (2007), states in the Ted Talk Why aren't we more compassionate? people become blind sided by blind spots.   People’s “simple act of noticing” (Goleman, 2007), is a researched justification as to why humans are losing the ability to be benevolent.   For me, it took years of therapy and a wide variety of specialists to help me re-gain inward focus.   I was putting all of my emotions on other people, specifically blaming them for the way they made me feel and also took out unfitting emotio...

A641 2 3 RB Am I a Resonant Leader_Psimer_Andrea

A641 2 3 RB Am I a Resonant Leader_Psimer_Andrea Am I inspirational?  How do I inspire people?             I am absolutely inspirational!  Last year, I committed to enrolling in graduate school.  What seemed to be an impossible task due to being a single parent, working full-time among a thousand other adult responsibilities.  I set a goal to complete the two-year Master’s program in 10-months.  As a result of my enthusiasm and drive, two of my co-workers enrolled in college classes.  One of my co-workers (Pat) followed suit and registered for two classes per term.  He said to me: “you inspired me, and if you can do it, so can I.”  I shared all of my resources with them including tuition assistance reimbursements and the military’s supplemental education grant which reimburses school expenses up to $1,000.00 per year.           ...
